belVita Breakfast Biscuits

11 Apr

I don’t usually get to grocery shop when all of the sampling stands are out. Usually it’s a mad dash through the aisles on my way home from work, but a few weeks ago I was able to go on a Saturday afternoon.

Now, as Chica Pants can attest, I normally avoid store employees like the plague. Not that I have anything against them, it’s just that I have to be “on” so much for my job that I prefer to be “off” whenever I can be.

But on this particular day, I found myself confronted with a sample stand that actually had something interesting enough to get me to talk to someone…coffee samples. There were these breakfast biscuit/bar thingies too. I’m always in the market for a fast, portable breakfast option, so I figured I may as well give them a whirl.

Now I’m an addict. (Hello, my name is Sassycas and I’m a belVita breakfast biscuit addict.)

OMG, are these things delicious. And filling. I’ve only tried the golden oat flavor, but it’s also available in blueberry and apple cinnamon, neither of which really appeal to me.

I don’t think they’re meant to be eaten as a complete breakfast, but I mentioned fast and portable, right? So for me, they are a complete breakfast when I’m short on time…which is often.

You get four good-sized biscuits per serving, which is 230 calories with 8g of fat. No high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils or artificial flavors or sweeteners.

They can be hard to find. At my grocery store, they are not shelved with the other breakfast bars. They are usually near the cookies and crackers.

If you give them a try, let me know what you think!

Doritos Locos Tacos

10 Apr

Doritos Locos TacosA Doritos taco shell? Yes, please!

I have no doubt that Taco Bell’s new Doritos Locos Tacos are bad for me in many ways, but please don’t tell me about them. They are super-delicious and I’ve decided that I’m not going to feel guilty about the occasional indulgence.

Doritos Locos Tacos are every bit as cheesy and tasty as you would imagine them to be. You will want to leave them in the provided sleeve while eating, though. The Doritos taco shells definitely are not as sturdy as the regular crunchy shells.

My only question for Doritos and Taco Bell…why did we have to wait so long for this yummy partnership???

Hocking Valley Scenic Railway: Easter Train

9 Apr

On Saturday we took our (almost) 3- year old son on the Easter Train at the Hocking Hills Railway.  Overall he had a great time but there were some definite areas needing improvement.  First, Let me tell you what the website described.  Then I will go on to add some actual details of our day.  The website, http://www.hvsry.org/index.htm described the Easter train as leaving promptly at 1:00 or sooner, so to get there early.  We were early, boarded the train by 12:15, and the train did not depart until about 1:20.  (1st fail.)  But, my son was very excited to be running around on a real train so fortunately, he didn’t mind the wait.  Second, the train was sold out, which was nice, and the website did mention it would be a full house.  The train cars themselves are from the 1920’s I believe.  The looked it, and smelled it a bit too.  But, I understand the railway is run on volunteers and does not have a huge budget.  It was so far worth the $17 per person for the experience.  We traveled about 20 minutes down the tracks to the ‘Easter Egg hunt.’   About half the kids brought their own basket for the egg hunt.  We did not.  The website never mentioned to bring one and I assumed maybe they were passing out bags once we got there.  Quite a few parents made the same assumption, so the train staff walked through the cars passing out clear plastic garbage bags.

My son was very excited to see the Easter Bunny standing alongside the tracks as we pulled up to the event which was staffed by a Boy Scout troop.  There had to have been nearly 1000 riders on the train, and the easter egg hunt area was extremely small.  It was separated by age groups but it was quite insufficient.  Parents were entering with the kids and scooping up handfulls of eggs.  I had to shove my son into the crowd and I had to push a “sports mom” out of the way just so my son could get ONE plastic egg.  The entire hunt was over in literally about 60 seconds.  For a sold out event, they did not plan it well at all and should not have allowed the parents in with the kids.  Luckily, my little boy was happy just getting 1 egg with a 3-pack of Sweet Tarts™ inside.  Needless to say, I was not the only disappointed parent. So, after the maybe 5 minutes we were off the train for the supposed Easter Egg Hunt, boarded the train once again to start our journey back.  As we waited about 30 minutes for everyone to get back on the train, a volunteer did walk through the train car asking if every child had gotten a prize.  We mentioned that we did not, and he handed my son a big chocolate Easter Bunny.  He was thrilled!  This made up for the disappointment I was feeling.  They also ended up handing my son another prize of an egg filled with M&Ms™.  Again, a very nice move on their part.  So, in the end, everyone was happy and enjoyed the ride back.

One other mention though.  The gift shop which is talked up quite nicely on the website…was closed.  I had promised my son the whole time he could pick out a new Thomas and Friends™ train while we were there, then he was very sad we could not keep that promise.  I asked about the shop being closed to be told that they had not restocked since last season.  That was not a smart move on their part.  There were probably 500 kids or more and I am sure the gift shop could have made a killing.  We ended up stopping at the local Walmart to get my son the promised train.

Even with a few bumps in the road, we all had a nice day and a good experience at the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway.

Smirnoff Ice™ New Flavor: Tropical Fruit

9 Apr

I recently was passing through a local beverage drive-thru and couldn’t help but notice a new flavor of Smirnoff Ice™ called Tropical Fruit.  I have to admit, I enjoy the occasional adult beverage and I just don’t feel right making mixed drinks on an average work night.  And sometimes I am just not in the mood for a glass of wine.  Somehow a quick bottle of a Smirnoff Ice™ seems to hit the spot during an evening wind down.  Or with an “I got home from work late and am making a frozen pizza for a quick dinner” kind of evening.  (C’mon, I know you know exactly what I am talking about.)  I tend to not enjoy the drinks that get too sweet.  I think a lot of the ‘wine coolery kind of chick beverages’ get too sweet.  And the Mike’s Hard Lemonades™ sometimes get a little overbearing for my taste buds.  The Smirnoff options tend to be quite tastey.  But again, I have found that a lot of the mango or tropical flavors get super sweet.  Smirnoff did an excellent job here.  These are just perfect.  I can tell it will be a summer favorite in the Chica Pants fridge.  I definitely endorse these.  If you are 21, of course, and looking for a refreshing adult thirst quencher, give the Smirnoff Ice™ Tropical Fruit delights a try.

Chap Stick™

2 Apr

I happen to be quite fond of using lip balms before bed on a regular basis. I also find myself using them throughout the days when I am sick or just sinusy. I’m not sure why, but when I breathe out of my mouth all day due to a stuffy nose, I just don’t feel “pretty” wearing lipstick. I have tried many different lip balms but always come back to my comfort zone which is good ole’ fashioned Cherry Chapstick™. Nothing works better. I am always suckered into trying new lip balms based on exciting marketing, but in the end, none come close to my Cherry Chapstick™. I tried switching over to the Burts Bees™ mostly because of the fun flavors but I just don’t feel it lasts as long or ‘does the trick.’

That being said, I was excited this weekend while at my local grocery store to discover a new (to me) and exciting Chap Stick™ option. It’s a ‘Moisterizing’ version and the flavor is Green Apple. I know, my life must be so exciting that I am blogging about Green Apple Moisturizing Chap Stick™. Well, let me just tell you, IT’S THAT GOOD! If you are feeling a bit dry, give this a whirl. You won’t be disappointed.
